TOP CUSTOMER REVIEW

Keeps squirrels off my pagoda which is awesome. Simple to attach with screws in this case. Can be cut down into smaller sections. I’ve used the all plastic style before but this is much more effective. Highly recommended.

  • DO GUTTER SPIKES HELP STOP SQUIRRELS FROM REACHING THE ROOF?

Yes. Gutter spikes help interrupt one of the most common squirrel access routes by making the gutter edge difficult to land on or run along. Used with other exclusion measures, they can help reduce squirrel activity around the roofline and attic entry zones.

Gutter Spikes: How Pest Spike Strips for Gutters and Guttering Spikes Protect Your Roofline From Pest Damage

Your gutters do more than carry rainwater. They form a sheltered ledge running the entire perimeter of your roof, and that ledge is one of the most attractive features on your property for birds, squirrels, and other pest animals looking for somewhere to nest, roost, or gain access to the roof space above. Pigeons sit in gutters for hours, leaving droppings that corrode the metal and block the downpipes. Squirrels use the gutter edge as a runway to reach fascia boards they can gnaw through. Starlings stuff nesting material into the channel until the water backs up and overflows down your walls. Every one of these problems starts with an unprotected gutter that invites animals to settle in.

Gutter spikes put an end to this invitation. A continuous line of pest spike strips for gutters installed along the outer edge of your guttering creates a barrier that prevents birds and squirrels from landing, perching, walking, or nesting in the gutter channel. The spikes do not harm the animals. They simply make the surface unusable, redirecting pest traffic away from your roofline and protecting your gutters, fascias, and roof space from the damage, blockages, and contamination that follow when animals make your guttering their home. This guide covers everything you need to know about choosing, installing, and maintaining guttering spikes that keep your roofline clean and your gutters flowing freely.

Why Your Gutters Need Spike Protection

Gutters occupy a uniquely vulnerable position on your property. They sit at the junction between the roof and the wall, they run the full length of the building, and they provide a combination of shelter, elevation, and proximity to roof access points that makes them irresistible to pest animals. Understanding the specific problems that unprotected gutters attract explains why gutter spikes are one of the most effective and economical pest control investments a property owner can make.

Bird Roosting and Nesting in Gutters

Pigeons, starlings, sparrows, and other urban birds treat gutters as convenient roosting ledges where they can rest, observe their surroundings, and shelter from wind and rain beneath the overhang of the roof edge. Over time, casual roosting escalates to permanent occupation as birds begin nesting in the gutter channel itself, filling it with twigs, leaves, feathers, and debris that obstruct water flow. A gutter blocked by nesting material cannot drain rainwater effectively, causing overflow that saturates exterior walls, damages render and paintwork, and can lead to internal damp problems that are expensive to remediate. The accumulation of bird droppings in and around the gutter also creates a corrosion risk, as the acidic content of bird waste attacks metal guttering and stains the fascia boards beneath.

Squirrel Access to the Roofline

Squirrels use gutters as a pathway along the roofline, travelling the length of the building to find the most accessible point for entering the roof space. The gutter edge gives squirrels a stable, elevated platform from which to inspect fascia boards, soffit panels, and roof tile edges for gaps they can exploit or enlarge through gnawing. A squirrel that reaches your gutter has effectively reached your roof, and from the roof it is a short chew through ageing timber or loose mortar to the warm, sheltered attic space inside. Installing pest spike strips for gutters breaks this access chain by preventing squirrels from using the gutter edge as a travel route in the first place.

Gutter Blockages and Water Damage

Even when birds and squirrels do not build full nests in your gutters, their regular presence deposits feathers, fur, droppings, food scraps, and nesting material fragments into the gutter channel. This organic debris mixes with windblown leaves and sediment to form dense blockages that restrict water flow, particularly at gutter joints, corners, and downpipe inlets. Blocked gutters overflow during heavy rain, sending water cascading down external walls where it penetrates brickwork, damages window frames, and pools at the base of the building where it can undermine foundations over time. The cost of clearing blocked gutters regularly or repairing the water damage they cause far exceeds the one-time investment in guttering spikes that prevent the problem from developing.

Health and Hygiene Concerns

Bird droppings in and around gutters are not just unsightly. They carry a range of pathogens including salmonella, E. coli, and the fungal spores that cause histoplasmosis, a respiratory condition contracted by inhaling dust from dried droppings. Accumulated droppings on fascias, walls, and pathways beneath roosting gutters create an ongoing health hazard, particularly for households with young children, elderly residents, or anyone with a compromised immune system. Gutter spikes that prevent birds from roosting eliminate the source of this contamination and reduce the associated health risk to everyone who lives in or visits the property.

Types of Gutter Spikes

The gutter spike market includes several product types designed to fit different gutter profiles, target different pest species, and meet different aesthetic and durability requirements.

Stainless Steel Gutter Spikes

Stainless steel pest spike strips for gutters use rigid metal pins on a steel base strip that is fixed along the outer lip of the gutter. Stainless steel offers unmatched durability, corrosion resistance, and pin rigidity. The pins cannot be bent by perching birds, flattened by squirrel weight, or degraded by constant exposure to rainwater, UV light, and temperature extremes. A stainless steel guttering spike installed today will outlast the gutter it is mounted on, making it a fit-and-forget solution that delivers decades of protection without maintenance or replacement.

Stainless steel gutter spikes are available in various pin configurations including single-row, double-row, and fan-pattern layouts. Single-row strips with pins pointing straight upward are suitable for narrow gutter lips where the spike needs to deter birds from perching on the outer edge. Double-row and fan-pattern configurations cover a wider area and are effective against both birds perching on the gutter edge and squirrels attempting to walk along the gutter channel.

Polycarbonate Gutter Spikes

Clear polycarbonate gutter spikes offer effective deterrence with minimal visual impact. From ground level, the transparent pins and base are nearly invisible against the gutter and fascia behind them, which makes polycarbonate the preferred choice for properties where the visible presence of metal spikes on the guttering would be aesthetically unacceptable. Polycarbonate spikes work well against birds and light pest animals but may not provide the same absolute rigidity as stainless steel against heavier animals like squirrels. For gutter applications where the primary concern is bird deterrence, polycarbonate provides an excellent balance of performance and visual discretion.

Clip-On Gutter Spike Systems

Some gutter spike products are designed with integral clips that attach directly to the gutter lip without adhesive or screws. These clip-on systems slide over the outer edge of the gutter and grip the lip through spring tension, providing a tool-free installation that does not penetrate the gutter material. Clip-on guttering spikes are particularly useful for plastic and uPVC gutters where drilling holes would compromise the waterproof integrity of the channel, and for rental properties where non-permanent installations that leave no damage are preferred.

The holding strength of clip-on systems depends on the gutter profile matching the clip dimensions. Before purchasing clip-on gutter spikes, confirm that the clip is compatible with your specific gutter profile, whether it is half-round, square, ogee, or deep-flow. A clip designed for a half-round profile will not grip securely on a square gutter and may detach under wind load or when an animal lands on the strip.

Gutter Guard and Spike Combination Systems

Some manufacturers offer products that combine a gutter guard mesh with an integrated spike strip along the outer edge. The mesh prevents leaves and debris from entering the gutter channel while the spikes prevent birds and squirrels from perching on the outer lip. This dual-function approach addresses both the pest deterrence and the debris management challenges that gutters face, providing a comprehensive roofline protection solution in a single product. These combination systems are typically more involved to install than standalone spike strips but deliver a broader range of benefits once in place.

Choosing the Right Gutter Spikes for Your Property

Selecting the most effective pest spike strips for gutters involves matching the product specifications to the pests you are targeting, the gutter type you have, and the conditions the spikes will face.

Identify Your Primary Pest

The pest species driving your gutter problem determines the spike specification you need. Pigeons and other medium to large birds require spikes with a pin height of at least 80 to 100 millimetres in a multi-row configuration that prevents the bird from finding a perching position between or beside the pins. Smaller birds like starlings and sparrows need tighter pin spacing because they can fit into gaps that would exclude a pigeon. Squirrels require thicker, more rigid pins than bird spikes provide, with a diameter of at least 1.5 to 2.0 millimetres to resist bending under the animal’s weight. If your gutters attract both birds and squirrels, choose a spike product engineered for squirrel deterrence, as it will also deter birds, while a bird-specific product may not stop squirrels.

Match the Product to Your Gutter Profile

Gutters come in various profiles including half-round, square, ogee, deep-flow, and box section, each with a different lip shape, width, and angle. The spike strip base and its mounting method must be compatible with your gutter profile to achieve a secure, stable attachment that does not obstruct water flow into the channel. Half-round gutters with a curved lip may require a flexible or curved base strip that conforms to the gutter edge, while square gutters with a flat lip provide a straightforward mounting surface for standard flat-base strips. Check the compatibility information provided by the spike manufacturer and confirm it matches your gutter profile before ordering.

Consider the Building Height and Visibility

On single-storey buildings where the gutters are visible at close range from ground level, the aesthetic impact of gutter spikes is a relevant consideration. Polycarbonate spikes or slim-profile stainless steel strips minimise the visual impact on the building’s appearance. On multi-storey buildings where the gutters are viewed from a distance, even standard stainless steel spikes are barely visible from ground level, making aesthetic concerns less significant and allowing the selection to prioritise performance and durability over visual discretion.

Assess the Exposure and Weather Conditions

Gutters on exposed elevations that face prevailing winds, heavy rain, and intense sun experience more demanding conditions than gutters on sheltered sides of the building. Stainless steel guttering spikes handle these conditions without concern, but polycarbonate products on heavily exposed elevations may degrade faster than those in sheltered positions. For exposed gutters on coastal properties where salt spray accelerates corrosion, grade 316 stainless steel provides enhanced resistance compared to the standard grade 304 used in most residential applications.

Planning for Full Perimeter Coverage

Birds and squirrels will quickly discover any section of unprotected gutter and concentrate their activity there, shifting the problem from the protected sections to the unprotected ones rather than resolving it. For complete effectiveness, plan to install gutter spikes around the entire perimeter of the building rather than protecting only the sections where you currently observe pest activity. Partial coverage merely relocates the pest problem to the nearest unprotected section, and the damage, droppings, and blockages simply move along the roofline to wherever the spikes stop.

Installing Pest Spike Strips for Gutters

Gutter spike installation is a straightforward process, but the elevated working position and the need for consistent, gap-free coverage along the entire gutter run require careful preparation and methodical execution.

Safety First: Working at Height

Gutter spike installation involves working at the roofline, which means working at height. Use a stable, correctly sized ladder positioned on firm, level ground with the base at the appropriate angle for the ladder length. Ideally, use a ladder standoff or stay that holds the ladder away from the gutter, preventing damage to the guttering and providing a more comfortable working position. For two-storey properties or buildings with difficult access, consider scaffolding or a mobile access tower that provides a secure working platform along the full length of the gutter run. Never overreach from a ladder. Descend and reposition the ladder for each section rather than stretching beyond a safe working radius.

Cleaning the Gutter Before Installation

Clear all debris, nesting material, droppings, and sediment from the gutter channel before installing the spikes. This cleaning serves two purposes. It removes existing blockages that would continue to impair gutter performance even after the spikes prevent further pest access, and it provides a clean mounting surface for the spike strip base, ensuring strong adhesive bonds and secure clip attachment. If bird droppings are present, wear gloves and a dust mask during cleaning to avoid contact with and inhalation of potentially contaminated material.

Mounting the Spike Strips

Position the spike strip along the outer lip of the gutter with the pins facing upward and slightly outward to create the maximum deterrent profile against approaching birds and animals. For adhesive-mounted strips, apply a continuous bead of outdoor-grade construction adhesive along the base and press the strip firmly onto the gutter lip. For clip-on systems, slide each clip over the gutter lip and press down until the spring grip engages securely. For screw-mounted strips on metal gutters, use stainless steel self-tapping screws at the intervals specified by the manufacturer, applying a dab of gutter sealant to each screw hole to maintain the waterproof integrity of the gutter channel.

Work along the gutter systematically, butting each strip tightly against the previous one with no gaps. At corners, cut the strip to fit the angle and start a new strip on the adjacent run, ensuring the corner itself is protected. At downpipe positions, work the strips up to and around the downpipe connection, maintaining continuous coverage across this common weak point.

Testing the Installation

After completing the installation, run water from a hose into the gutter at several points along the run and confirm that water flows freely through the channel to the downpipes without being obstructed by the spike strip base or any adhesive overspill. The spikes should sit on or above the gutter lip without projecting into the channel where they could catch debris and create the blockages they were installed to prevent. If any section of the strip is interfering with water flow, adjust its position to clear the channel before the adhesive or fixings are fully set.

Documenting the Installation

Photograph the completed installation from ground level and, if possible, from the working height showing the strip position on the gutter lip. These photographs serve as a reference for future maintenance inspections, help you identify any sections that may have shifted or been damaged, and provide a record of the product and coverage for insurance or property sale documentation. If you are installing gutter spikes on a property you manage for a client, the photographs also form part of the service record that demonstrates the work completed.

Maintaining Your Guttering Spikes

Gutter spikes are a low-maintenance product, but the gutter environment exposes them to organic debris and weathering that benefits from occasional attention.

Annual Gutter Clean With Spike Inspection

During your annual gutter clean, which should be part of every property’s routine maintenance regardless of whether spikes are installed, inspect the spike strips for any sections that have shifted, loosened, or been damaged. Reattach any loose strips, replace any broken sections, and clear any debris that has accumulated on or between the spikes. The annual gutter clean is also the opportunity to remove any nesting material that birds may have attempted to build on or around the spikes before the spikes defeated the attempt, as partial nesting debris left in place can accumulate over seasons and eventually provide enough material for the bird to establish a nest despite the spikes.

Checking After Severe Weather

High winds, heavy snow loads, and ice formation can displace or damage gutter spike strips. After any significant weather event, do a visual check from ground level to confirm the spike strips are still in position along the full gutter run. Binoculars can be helpful for inspecting upper-floor gutters from ground level. Any sections that appear displaced or damaged should be inspected at working height and repaired promptly to prevent pest animals from exploiting the gap.

Monitoring Pest Activity After Installation

In the weeks following installation, observe your gutters for signs of continued pest activity. Birds that were roosting on the gutters before the spikes were installed may attempt to return to their habitual perch, and their initial reaction to the spikes confirms whether the installation is performing as intended. If birds are successfully deterred from the spiked sections but are settling on unprotected areas nearby, extend the coverage to close these gaps. If birds appear to be landing on or between the spikes, the pin height or spacing may be insufficient for the species involved, and a taller or more closely spaced product may be needed to achieve effective deterrence.

The Roofline Defence That Pays for Itself

Every year that your gutters go unprotected, you pay for it in blocked downpipes, stained walls, corroded guttering, contaminated surfaces, and the risk of pest animals gaining access to your roof space where the real damage begins. Gutter spikes eliminate these ongoing costs with a single installation that requires no power, no chemicals, no refills, and virtually no maintenance. The spikes sit in position through every season, deterring every bird that tries to roost and every squirrel that tries to walk the gutter edge, while the rainwater flows freely through the clear channel below.

Whether you choose stainless steel for maximum durability, polycarbonate for visual discretion, or a clip-on system for tool-free installation, the right pest spike strips for gutters transform your roofline from an open invitation into a closed boundary. Install them around the full perimeter, maintain them with an annual inspection, and your gutters will do the one job they were designed to do, carrying water away from your building, without sharing their ledge with the pest animals that have been exploiting them for years.

So we had a problem with squirrels getting into our our pool heater and feasting on pecans. I looked for several things to try and prevent them and decided on these ‘cat repellent’ spike strips. After nearly 2 weeks, there is no sign of them in the heater.

Pretty decent product , I was happy to see something like this on the market. There are bobcats spotted near the back of my house, and I wanted some line of defense to protect my 10 pound dog that likes to hang out in the backyard during the day . Your product seem to take care of that first line of defense, (preventive scaling/walking the TOP of my wooden back fence, and jumping into my backyard).

I do feel this product will serve me well over all on any predators over 25 pounds that may be interested enough to hop up-top my fence.

Incredibly thick and the cats haven’t been back to sit on our outdoor furniture! We taped some together to make sure them larger.

I ordered the defender spikes to keep possums off of my wooden fence and since I put them defender spikes up I have not seen a possum on the fence. They have not seemed to deter squirrels, however, but that’s okay with me. I am going to put up a few more strips.

We are at our wits end over the squirrels & cats that destroy my plants & smell up my backyard. We stated with one package & have added many more. It doesn’t exactly keep the cats away, but they don’t like walking on them & squirrels are avoiding them. We did have to redo them because the suggested glue did not work on the bricks.

THis was one of the best things i got. Recently my cat has been trying to escape to the oustide world from my window and i have been keep my windows closed because of this. SO i saw this and thought this might work. Well by Golly.. it worked.. he put his paws on it and next thing i knew and say was him running away.. I check his paws to see if any injuries. I found none.. He was just pricked and it works.. I have been able to leave the window open and i dont expect him to try to get onto the window sill no more.. So far it has been like a month or so and he is no where near the window.. Great things come in small packages.. I did not even taped it to the window sills.. I just put it on and then when i closed the window i take them off the window sills.

I glued this on my fence posts, my black fence post was turning white due to all the bird droppings.

After installing this, I’ve noticed a very significant reduction of bird traffic to my fence post, but it did not completely eliminate it. Some birds can stand on the spikes just fine.

Overall I’m happy with the product as it did reduce bird traffic, I hope the company will find a way to completely eliminate bird traffic, perhaps longer spikes may work?

The product came as specified and expected. It would have been more helpful, particularly for people who are not very handy, to have recommendations for hole size and screw size to drill, or type of adhesive to apply. The general instructions of “clean surface and apply adhesive” or “clean surface and screw into place” might be a bit too general for some buyers. In my application on a gutter downspout, 7/64″ pilot holes in the downspout with a #6 stainless steel sheet metal screw 3/8″ long worked well with this product. I was careful to select a metal alloy screw compatible with the aluminum downspout to avoid corrosion with dissimilar metals.

Thank you very much for such helpful product !It arrived even prior listing date, great green packaging. It took only one attempt to train “my” squirrel, which used to ruin all my container projects on my balcony. I don’t have any intruders anymore. I am recommending this product to my friends and neighbors

Thanks. I just installed several strips around a raised strawberry box that was under constant attack by squirrels and birds. They worked so well I just placed another order to protect my espaliered apple tree and pear tree.

Squirrels were jumping from the deck railing (on the steps) to the platform feeder hanging from a tree branch. The traffic has stopped! I used garden twine to attach it; it’s secure with no damage to our new deck. In the summer I will use them to protect the rail planters as well.

Like everything about bird spike. Easy to install ( I used double sided tape I already had) and…. It works… I sit on my balcony a lot and have observed that the birds fly around the posts but no longer sit on the railing and drop bird poop on my balcony tiles

These worked perfectly for what we needed. I like that they’re spiky enough to keep cat off, but not so spiky that they hurt her when she does paw at them. Couldn’t be happier.

We have had swarms of swallows, sparrows and pidgins setting up shop on our back railing for years. The ness they left needed to be cleaned up so often, I started leaving the power washer in the backyard. These spikes were EXACTLY the right size and we haven’t had a bird back there for weeks. I’m mad at myself for not getting these sooner. Outstanding product!
